Almshouse plays original rock that might remind you of classic 1970s-flavored singer/songwriter fare, but the band’s 2016 release “Bitter Thing” flirted with Americana while displaying a slight progressive tinge. The prog-rock tendency becomes even clearer in their 2019 singles "Auld Lang Syne" and "October Song." The Almshouse trademark -- dual electric guitar leads that wrap harmonically around each other -- is used to powerful effect in their singles "Gaslight" and "Cups (20,000 Sunsets)" and both songs have well-received videos. The band's live sets often include one or two carefully curated covers, as well as occasional acoustic versions of their heavier songs that showcase thoughtful lyrics, Irene’s sultry “burnished alto” voice, very handsome fretwork by Troy, Ken & Tony, and James’s tasteful drumming.
